Redbuds Are Blooming! Zora In Springtime!
March 27, 2010
Spring has sprung and the redbud is blooming. It’s time to take Miss Zora out for some pictures! Zora is a 2009 Miami Motley, Fully-Striped! Zora was produced by Carol Huddleston of Low Belly Reptiles. With every shed she gets lighter, brighter and more silver.
My favorite thing about Zora, aside from her exceptional beauty, is her level of activity! As soon as the sun goes down, Zora is out and about: lounging in her hammock, defying gravity by crawling along the screen lid upside down, peeking out of her paper towel tube or managing her extensive tunnel system. Every evening as I am falling asleep I can hear small crashes as Zora’s climbing adventures fail once again. Maybe that’s why she’s such a good model outside- she knows her limits! (Don’t forget, you can click on the pictures for a larger view).
Rosy Lavender Bloodreds: Announcing A Breeding Partnership!
March 14, 2010
I am extremely excited to announce the launch of a new breeding project, in partnership with John Finsterwald, Colorado Corns. If luck is with us, John and I will use the hold-backs from this season for a future generation of Rosy Lavender Bloodreds! John has sent me his male Rosy Bloodred, Fred, on breeding loan.
Fred will be paired up with the lovely Lily, Lavender Bloodred. The first generation will be Bloodreds, het for Lavender. We will have to wait and see how “Rosy” they turn out! Split the clutch, send half of them home to John in Colorado, grow them up for three years, breed them back to each other and voila! Rosy Lavender Bloodreds! Fred is out of Don Soderberg’s line of Rosy Bloods.
It is thought that this line of SMR Rosy Bloods, originating from a wild-caught pair, is actually carrying the Kastanie gene. As I understand things, this is expected to be proven in 2010. Whle I typically like instant gratification in terms of cornsnake breeding projects, the prospect of producing some of the very first Rosy Lavender Bloodreds in the United States was too exciting to pass up! Thank you, John, for the opportunity! Fred is freshly-shed, and Lily is blue. Watch for updates!
The Old And The New!
March 14, 2010
Razzle, 2009 Hypo Lavender Stripe, just shed and went out for a quick photo shoot! He is getting lighter and lighter with each shed. Razzle gave me quite a fright in January when he experienced a double regurgitation, possibly due to a very small increase in meal size. After two months of extra-careful treatment, Razzle is perfectly healthy and making up for lost growing time!
And I am very pleased to introduce Yggdrasil, 2009 Lava Bloodred, produced by Joe Novak of Captains Colubrids, Hudson, Florida. I have wanted to get into this morph ever since I saw Carol Huddleston’s first baby, and finally my dream has come true! Yggdrasil will join Ruby as a foundation sire of my Lava Bloodred Stripe project. Now I am just waiting for his female counterpart to hatch! Ygg is an amazing beauty, and a true “hateling.”
Alachua Blue Beauty!
March 11, 2010
Let’s try this again… Lavender Bloodred Lily is blue! And she is quite definitely a female. I learned my lesson; I checked. Lily is not amused by my attempt at a photo shoot, but I wanted to document the rebirth of the SnickerSnakes 2010 breeding season.
Lily’s mate, Fred, is settling in well. He’s blue right now and I’ve just taken a few pictures of him. I’ll formally introduce Fred after he sheds, but here’s a sneak peek! Fred’s owner, John Finsterwald of Colorado Corns and I are very excited to match this pair up and, if luck is with us, start the process of breeding a very rare morph!
